Commissions and Public Art

My commissions are not fundamentally different from the works made for exhibitions. Some are larger in format and have had bigger budgets, which has introduced me to methods and materials that I would never have thought of working with otherwise. There are some other prerequisites and challenges that come with public art. I try to work in relation to the host/ institution/ location’s history, environment, and activity, but with some kind of twist. It demands plenty of research but can also be a creative boost.

The relationship with the audience or public is also a little different than in a gallery. Someone is going to live with the art for years, maybe see it daily, and they haven't chosen to seek it out. I try to keep that in mind, but it hasn't really changed my way of working.
